Ear wax … why and what to do…

February 16, 2018 by Raji

Ear wax is a natural secretion which protects the ears from dust, bad bacteria and foreign body.

So why do some people constantly suffer from excessive cerumen  than others? Well it could be any one of the following reasons:

.narrow ear canals

.frequently putting the cotton buds in the ears

.hairy ear canals

. dry ear wax

.overproduction on ear wax

.swimmers ears etc

So what are the symptoms of wax build up : Earache, hearing loss, itchiness in ears, tinnitus etc.

What can I do about this : Ear was basically is self cleaning. So do nothing. If it has reached a  state where it is causing you discomfort of hearing loss then it needs to be be softened first . Using ear wax drops from the chemist. Do not do this if you have perforated ear drum. Talk to your doctor. Get a  professional to remove it for you . No please do not attempt to do this at home.

Points to remember : It is easier to remove the wax if it is soft and moist. Hence using ear wax drops that softens the wax for at least 4-5 days before your visit to the doctor is advisable. Spray based wax solutions are better and give better outcome according to newer studies.
