Types of Middle Ear Infections

There are two types of Middle Ear Infections or Otitis Media. Those are,

Acute otitis media

This type of ear infection comes very quickly and the symptoms include swelling and redness in the ear behind and around the eardrum. You may experience fever, ear pain and also hearing loss.

Otitis media with effusion

Even after infection goes away, mucus and fluid will continue to build up in the middle ear sometimes. This can cause the feeling of ear being full and hence affects your ability to hear something.

Causes of Middle Ear Infections

Ear Infection is caused by a bacterium or virus in the middle ear. There are many reasons for children to get  infections frequently. Sometimes cold, flu or allergy can also be the causes of ear infections. Often stem from a prior infection of the respiratory tract and that spreads to the ears. WHen the tube connecting the middle ear to the pharynx is blocked, the fluid will collect behind the eardrum. Then bacteria will grow in the fluid and cause pain and inflammation.

Best Way to Treat Middle Ear Infection?

Want to know about the best ways to treat middle ear infection? Just follow the below article.

There are a number of ways to treat middle ear infections. Your audiologist will base treatment on your children’s age, health and medical history. They also consider the following points.

    1. Severity of the infection
    2. Ability of your children to tolerate antibiotics
    3. Preference and opinion of the parents

Under middle ear infection management, depending on the severity of the condition, your audiologist may tell you the best way to treat the pain and wait to see if the symptoms go away.

Our audiologists at MY AUDIOLOGY CLINIC will take care of the patient and do physical examination prior to the treatment. They may also conduct a test called tympanometry to assess the working condition of the middle ear. They will interpret the results and start the treatment accordingly.
